Windmill PowerWhen you think of “windmill power” what comes to your mind? Would it happen to be something like the picture on your right? You do know that man has harnessed the FREE power of the wind for thousands of years. It has been used to power the sails on a sailing ship, as a means of pumping water from shallow and deep wells and many more things. The good part is that for now the wind is still free so why aren’t you using it to harness its power for your own benefit?

We use giant coal fired power stations spewing immense quantities of carbon into the atmosphere and nuclear power plants that have the potential to spew who knows what into the atmosphere, to produce electrical energy we use to power or homes. Yet as a society we fail to utilize the FREE sources of energy that are readily available. You can see the folly in this, but we continue to allow big corporations and the politicians that receive big campaign donations from these large corporations, to continue to operate carbon producing coal power plants and potentially devastating nuclear power plants.

Well the big question here is “why not harness the power of the wind to generate power?” The wind has been around since the beginning of time and will, I believe, continue to blow on us until the end of time. That is way more than you or I can say for the non-renewable energy sources, like oil, that we are now consuming worldwide at an alarming rate.

One of the major problem with windmill power “known today as wind power generation” until recently has been the cost of producing and utilizing renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. With the continued rise in cost of fuel oil and gas, renewable energy solutions are becoming a viable alternative. Also as a bonus that will save you money, more research is being done to help reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of renewable energy generators.

What most people don’t realize is that a home wind generator can be produced very inexpensively by anyone that possesses common sense and just a few home handyman skills. So, if you are a person like that you can build a wind generator cheaply and use free wind power to drive it. Look, even a politician should be able to understand the benefit that provides individuals and to society as a whole. Of course I am sure they will have to appoint a committee to determine how our wonderful government can tax you for the use of windmill power.

Now in all seriousness, one single home built wind generator will not allow you to disconnect from the power grid. The thing is this, if you generate part of the power that you use for free, then you are not only helping the environment but you are helping your finances as well. Remember, you can always build more than one wind turbine or maybe if the wind in your area isn’t consistent you can add solar power to you renewable energy system and create all the power you need.

Since you are reading this post I am sure that you, like other environmentally conscious people, worry that during the last 100 years (which is such a very small part of history) we have decided to turn away from renewable energy sources. Our government and the biggest portion f our population has not given much thought for the next 100, 200, 500 years and what the continued use of fossil fuels will do to our planet, yet most of us have literally on our doorstep, a renewable source of energy - lets use it.

Build a wind generator for your own use. Your windmill will not look like the traditional windmill used hundreds of years ago but it will produce way more power. Get your guide to build a wind generator here.

Most people don’t realize just how big the vertical wind turbine business is getting. Of course renewable energy is on everyones mind these days but you are thinking in the terms of “how can I reduce my electrical bill, my gas bill, how these energy cost increases are affecting my pocketbook? That is the way you should think and I applaud you 100%.

Now though let’s get things in perspective. The majority of energy that is going to be produced by vertical wind turbines is going to come from wind farms. That means that as far as cost for electricity is concerned, you are just out of luck. In fact you actually will see the cost continue to rise until it is profitable for producers to create more alternative energy solutions.

If you have did any research at all into alternative energy you already know that the cost of constructing a 1 mega watt vertical wind turbine farm is two or more times the cost of building a traditional fossil fuel supplied 1 mega watt power supply station. In fact most people don’t use alternative energy like that produced by a vertical wind turbine and solar power systems because of the initial investment.

What a lot of people don’t appear to realize is that all this interest in vertical wind turbines has sparked a lot of competition in certain states where research and development are better suited. Colorado is one of those states. New mexico is another.

I actually didn’t understand the amount of interest in the manufacturing side of this new trend in energy production until I read a mile long article from the Colorado Springs Gazette..

Below is a short exert from that article:

At stake for Colorado Springs and other communities: Good-paying jobs in manufacturing and research and development and hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment by an industry that’s barely tapped its growth potential. In today’s high-stakes world of economic development, wind, solar and other renewable energy companies are being aggressively pursued in the same way computer chip makers and other high-tech firms were courted 20 years ago.

And for a community such as Colorado Springs, which has lost thousands of high-tech jobs, the allure of renewable energy has made it one of the Economic Development Corp.’s top three targeted industries, along with biosciences and sports and outdoor fitness.

Yet Colorado Springs wasn’t even in the running for some of the most recent renewable energy splashes, White said.

Last month, Vestas announced it will build a $240 million wind turbine tower manufacturing plant that will bring more than 450 jobs to Pueblo - but Colorado Springs lacks the access to railroads that Pueblo has, White said. It was the same for Vestas’ blade plant in Windsor and its blade and nacelle plants in Brighton. Railroads are critical to transporting the very large, heavy wind-generation products.

What’s more, Pueblo offered Vestas $11.8 million in incentives, plus another $2 million from the state.

New Mexico, meanwhile, offered as much as $130 million in incentives to land what could eventually be a $500 million investment in solar energy manufacturing by German energy company Schott AG that could employ as many as 1,500 people in Albuquerque.

Wind and Solar Power SystemNow as you can see form the numbers above you are talking hundreds of million and even billions of dollars being spent just on the manufacturing aspects of vertical wind turbines and solar power systems. With that in mind think of how this sudden increase in interest for renewable energy and the input of such large amounts of money can benefit you.

No I am not talking about investing in stocks or companies though that may be something you could look into. What I am talking about is the fact that as more and more big money is being poured into research then better and more affordable wind and solar power systems will be produced.

Remember how expensive the first computers were back in the fifties. Then in the seventies people with big ideas started investing in producing more and better system until today you can buy a computer that will do so many marvelous things that I can’t start listing them for a few hundred dollars.

Well I don’t think you will be able to buy a 2 kilo watt vertical wind turbine or solar power system for a few hundred dollars in my or your lifetime I do think the will become affordable in the next 20 years or so.

I know you are asking what good that will do me now? Well the answer is none. Not one iota of good will it do you now but it could benefit you now. With just a little know how you could be saving yourself hundreds every year on your electrical bill. The nice part is that you can do it for just a couple hundred dollars which includes the getting the knowledge.

I know, the next question is How?

Wind Power Generation in the News

Based on a news article in the Wall Street Journal it appears that GE and Google are pushing Uncle Sam to spend lots of taxpayer money on upgrading electrical transmission lines so that GE can increase the profits they already get from the vertical wind turbine business they have and Google can increase their profits from computer software.

Below is an exert from the story.

General Electric Co. and Google Inc. said they will jointly ramp up their efforts to prod the U.S. government to upgrade the nation’s electrical-transmission lines so that the grid can better accommodate more renewable energy.

Both companies sell technology that would benefit from an improved grid.

GE has built one of the world’s biggest wind-turbine businesses over the past few years, and Google makes computer software it says could help facilitate the introduction of more renewable energy to the U.S. grid.

If you are a member of the Wall Street Journal online you can get the rest of the story a http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122169192850849785.html

Is More Profit for GE and Google a Bad Thing?

Well in my opinion it depends. When looked at on the surface it would appear that getting Uncle Sam to upgrade transmission lines would be a benefit to everyone, including the public. But is that really the case.

Think about it like this. If there is healthy competition in your area of the country then the competition will do everything in their power to give you the best service possible and still see a reasonable return on their investment. If you are out in the country where there is no competition then the upgrades that would be paid for with your tax dollars will not reach me for many many years.

It appears to me that the vast majority of the benefits would go to the companies that would gain more profits from the upgrade. The tax payer would pay more tax and Joe/Jane Public would foot the bill.

Instead of helping the already big companies make a killing from renewable energy like wind power generators and solar panel grids why don’t you take matters in your own hands an build or by your on vertical wind turbine and solar panels for you home.

Residential vertical wind turbines are getting more and more affordable and can put out an increasing amount of power. Solar panel homes are one of the best and simplest ways to create a continuous flow of renewable energy. Put the two together and you have an unbeatable combination.

The good thing is that if you build your own vertical wind turbine and/or solar panels for your home you can do it for such a small amount of money that most people are shocked.

A vertical wind turbine kit with a 33 foot pole can be gotten for about $6,500. With an average wind speed of between 8 and 12 miles per hour it could realistically save you 40 to 60% of your electrical bill every year. Depending on what you pay for electricity this could equal $1,000 to $2,000 per year.

Pre-built vertical wind turbineBy adding a solar panel grid to your existing home you could potentially reduce you electrical bill by 60 to 100%, depending on the number of panels and amount of sun you get to them each day.

Also there is a great possibility that the energy rebate and government grants for converting over to renewable energy using wind power generators or solar panels would pay more that half the cost of the renewable energy system

That appears to me to be a more reasonable use of our tax payer dollars. I don’t know about you but I like to see regular people instead of corporation get something out of the incentive the Government gives for reducing atmospheric pollution. Don’t you?

Home Wind Turbine: News from CNN

I just read this from CNN and thought you would like the information. It is about home wind turbines in England but the story is pretty much the same in the US and other parts of the world.

Here is an exert with the link to the whole home wind turbine story at the end.

By Matthew Knight
For CNN

LONDON, England (CNN) — Micro wind turbines are beginning to pop up all over our urban and rural landscapes. But is it worth investing your hard-earned cash in your very own wind machine? In short, it depends. Take a look at our quick guide to see if “small wind” could help you reduce your energy bills and your carbon footprint.

In the long-term a micro wind turbine could be a very sound investment.

What is available?

There are plenty of small wind turbines on the market. Most are the more traditional horizontal axis — which have two or three blades. But some are vertical-axis which look a bit like the beaters on a food mixer. Micro turbines can be as small as 100 to 500 watts and can be mounted on the side of a building. Larger models — 2.5 kilowatts to 50 kilowatts — need to be mast-mounted.

How much do they cost?

Prices vary a lot. One kilowatt models range from $1500 to $3000. More powerful models will cost considerably more. A six kilowatt machine will set you back $45,000 and 15 kilowatts a hefty $70,000. Prices generally include installation but other essential kit — you will need a battery and an inverter if you are off grid –may not be included. With regular maintenance, turbines can last over 20 years.

Are subsidies available?

Yes. In many countries government grants are often available. For example, in the UK the Low Carbon Buildings Program offers funding up to £2,500 on domestic renewable energy ventures.

Also, prices are falling all the time as more people invest in small wind systems. Alex Murley, Small Systems Manager at the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) told CNN: “The domestic wind turbine market in the UK grew by 80 percent from 2006 to 2007″. Improving technology will also drive costs down.

Is it worth getting one?

Read the rest of the story.

Remember, you don’t have to pay for installation, you can get a home wind turbine kit and install it yourself or go whole hog and build your home wind turbine and install it. The first saves you about 25% or more of the cost on theinstallation, the latter saves you 99% of the total cost of your home wind turbine,

The Making of a Wind Generator

When you begin thinking about producing power to run the appliances in your home the first thing you should consider is whether or not you have enough wind speed in your area of the country to produce energy from wind. The minimum wind speed you need is about 10 miles per hour consistently.

With this you can get enough energy from wind to make it feasible to build a wind generator. In all honesty, even if you don’t have consistent wind speeds of 10 or more miles per hour it may be a good idea for you to build a wind generator because the cost to build one is pretty low.

Here is a story that will give you an idea of what I mean.

I started looking around for a pre-built wind generator that would produce 1,000 watts. After seeing just how much a new on cost I decided that that just wasn’t the way for me to go. I figured out in a hurry that it would be my best bet to learn how to a small wind turbine for my own use.

You know, in thinking about it building one myself just made sense. The home wind turbine I initially looked at cost better than $3000. I could have afford it but I thought, why pay that much right now, I can do some more checking around and find a cheaper one or maybe even turn this into a family project we can all participate in.

As you can tell from the direction this story is going I ended up opting to make it a family project and just built it. I purchase a set of step by step direction and started in on building my first wind generator. The plans I had gotten showed us not only where to find inexpensive materials but also where to find free materials as well.

I stopped by a construction site not far from the house and the Forman gave me a piece of heavy pvc pipe that I used to make the blades from. The blade design is not all that hard to make. The guide had a pattern you follow to cut the individual blades by. The blades are cut at an angle so they catch the wind more efficiently to make small wind turbine produces the most power.

I thought learning how to make a wind generator was going to be difficult but it really wasn’t, I even found the DC motor used to produce the current online at ebay. It cost me under $50 including shipping.

Look, it is not hard build your own small wind turbine. There is nothing special about the parts you will need. In fact you can find them at your local hardware store or even from the junk yard, depending upon the design you decide on using.

You know that everyone is going to satellite TV now days. Because of that it can be fairly simple, depending on what part of the country you live in, to get the to give you their old discarded TV towers. These old TV towers work great as a base to build the wind generator on.

Here is another thing that might interest you. We were able to get the whole thing set up over a couple of weekends.

I know you are wondering how much this whole project cost me. Well the total cost was under $100.

With benefits like this what is holding you back from building your own small wind turbine? You can do it and it is easy. Go ahead get your set of plans today. Click this link: Wind and Solar Generators

O and just in case you didn’t get the connection from the name of the link this guide will also show you how to build your own solar power grid and at a compatible savings to the savings on building your wind generator.

The energy of wind generates renewable power that you can use to produce electricity using a vertical wind turbine. The method of production is simple and straight forward. It doesn’t have to be expensive and it doesn’t take an engineer or electrician to create.

You can build your vertical wind turbine using blades that turn like the blades on a fan or by using a vertical axis turbine that spins round like the blower on you air conditioner doesn’t make a difference, they all convert energy the same way. The spinning shaft of the wind turbine is connected to a DC motor that when spent at specific velocities produces a current, measured in volts, that is used to power your home.

When this is in a grid-connected mode the electrical current produced by the home wind turbine goes directly into the power grid and supplies AC electricity to the nearest building for immediate use. When the electrical power being produced is not used immediately this surplus power is sold instantly back to the power grid. This is done by the current going through your electrical meter and causing it to turn backwards.

When it is in the stand-alone mode the turbine is configured to charge a local battery bank. This battery pack then stores the electrical power produced for use a a latter time. The storage capacity of the power generated is then based on the capacity of the battery bank used.

From looking at the expense and labor involved in maintaining batteries to store your excess electrical power it appears that the easiest and simplest way to go is to tie into the public power grid and use it to store the excess power generated by your vertical wind turbine.

You will need to know the laws governing this in your state and how the local power company allows your connection and credits. Some states require power companies to purchase back any excess power generated from a home energy system while others either do not or have laws so vague that it is hard to tell what is allowed.

Here is a short video to watch that shows how a circular vertical wind turbine works attached to a house.

There are all grades of materials you can get at little to no cost to make a circular spinning home wind turbine that produces a reasonable amount of power. After you build your first then building a couple more will be easy. The catch is usually in building your first.

According to the the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) the United States leads the world in the amount of electricity generated using the energy of wind. A portion of that power is produced by individual home owners using small vertical wind turbines that generate from one to one hundred watts in capacity.

These small home wind turbines do not have any tax incentive like the larger power generating wind farms but they are producing power that equals to about 70 mega watts. In 2007 the market for renewable power generated with vertical wind turbines increased by 14%, which equals about 9.7 mega watts.

Much of this home energy generation is done by companies installing home wind turbines for the consumer. When this happens you find the cost of a vertical wind turbine ranging from a low of about $2,000 to more than $6,000 for a home wind turbine that produces from 3.4 kilo watt Hours per day (KWD) to one that produces 16.6 KWD.

To find out how much that would save you on your electrical bill look at your KWH used per months divided by your total bill to get the actual actual cost for each KWH. Now multiply the monthly KWH your home wind turbine produces by the KWH coat and subtract it from your bill.

As an example lets say you use 1,000 KWH per month at a $.30 per KWH cost. You purchase a vertical wind turbine that produces a maximum of 5 KWH per day. Your average output based on wind speeds for your area is 4 KWH a day. By multiplying 4 x 30 you get 120 KWH per month multiplied by $.30 equals $36 saved per month or $432 per year.

That doesn’t sound like much but over the life of the vertical wind turbine, we will use 20 years as the figure, that would equal $8,664. With an initial investment of about $2,000 that means you would save 4 time what you spent and this doesn’t include the continued rise in electrical power cost over the 20 year period.

Now that you see just how much you could save with one of the smallest home wind turbines out there let’s take a practical look at how you could potentially take that initial investment of $2,000 and turn it into enough energy to create 500 KWH a month or more.

Believe it or not but with a little initiative and a willingness to make a family project out of it you can purchase step by step directions with diagrams, buy and make the parts you need and build a home wind turbine that will put out about 500 KWH of power for around $200. That is of course assuming you have wind speeds in your area that are adequate for generating energy from wind.

This is something you want to make into a fun project that everyone can enjoy and that you can be proud of when it is finished. To find out more on just how you can do this simply go to earth for energy and take a look at the guide they have for building your own home solar panels and home wind turbine. It is an easy and fun project that you can share with other members of the family.
